Drain and disconnectWater goes where the municipality allows. Pump and filter are disconnected, and the electrical is already off.
Cut out the liner and wallsThe liner comes out, then the wall panels are cut into sections and rolled rather than hauled long.
Remove the baseSand, cove, ground cloth and the block ring come out with the pool.
Backfill and compactThe area is backfilled in lifts and compacted so it does not settle into a bowl over the first winter.
Grade and cleanFinal grade is raked level and the site is left ready for lawn or a new surface.

Special considerations

Draining a pool is a regulated disposal question in some places — it does not just go over the fence into a neighbour's yard.
If a deck surrounds the pool, it usually has to come off with it; the deck is built around the wall and cannot come off afterwards.
Backfill for a future hard surface has to be compacted properly, and that is worth saying before the hole is filled, not after.

What happens to the space afterward?

You get the space back: backfilled, compacted and graded, ready for lawn, a patio, a shed or a garden. If a hard surface is going on top, tell us first so the fill is done to suit it.

Yes, if the backfill is compacted properly. That is a decision to make before the hole is filled.

What happens to the sand and liner?

They go out with the load. Neither is something to bury and hope about.
