Patio Removal in Rochester, NY
This page is about patios built from pavers, brick, flagstone and natural stone. The units themselves are the light part of the job — the bedding sand, the compacted base and the edge restraint underneath are what actually weigh, and they are usually why the patio failed in the first place.
- From $1,000
- Haul-away included
- Footings and posts pulled
Why homeowners remove a patio
A paver or stone patio that has settled, heaved or started growing weeds through the joints is almost never a surface problem. Water got under it, the base lost its compaction, or the edge restraint let go and the units spread. Laying new pavers over a dead base buys one season before the same thing happens again.
The other common reason is a change of plan. The patio is the right size for a table and four chairs and the wrong size for the family that now uses the yard, or it sits where an addition, a pool or a garage is going.
What we remove
- Concrete pavers and permeable pavers
- Clay brick patios, including older patios with sand joints
- Flagstone and bluestone, dry-laid or mortared
- Natural stone and travertine set on a base
- Bedding sand, crushed stone base and geotextile fabric
- Aluminium, steel and plastic edge restraint
- Raised patio walls and step units tied into the patio
Signs it is time
- Ponding water or a puddle that sits for days after rain
- Units that rock underfoot or have spread at the edges
- Weeds and grass growing through joints that were once tight
- Visible settlement along the house or against a step
- Steps or a retaining edge that has moved away from the patio
- A patio size or layout that no longer works for the yard
Our patio removal process
- Project review and quotePhotos of the patio, the edge restraint and the access tell us the material type and roughly how much base is under it. We quote the surface and the base separately so you can see what each part costs.
- Lift the surfacePavers, brick or stone are lifted rather than scooped where any of it is worth keeping. Units you want to reuse are stacked on pallets out of the way.
- Remove base and restraintBedding sand, crushed base and edge restraint come out next. This is the heavy part of the load, and the reason a patio removal is priced by volume rather than by square footage alone.
- Prepare for what followsIf a new patio or a different surface is going in, the subgrade is left graded and ready. If the area is going back to lawn, it is brought to a workable grade rather than left as a hole.
- Load, haul and cleanMaterial is loaded and hauled, with stone and masonry kept separate from mixed debris where the facility allows it. The work area is swept and raked clean.
Special considerations
- Saving the pavers is possible but slows the job down — tell us before we start and we will stack rather than scoop. Expect breakage on thin or already-cracked units.
- Base material is not clean fill. It gets hauled to a facility that accepts mixed aggregate rather than dumped on a vacant lot.
- A patio tied into a retaining wall or a step has to come apart in the right order, or the wall starts moving while you are working on it.
- If the patio is mortared to a slab, treat it as concrete removal rather than paver removal — the pricing is different.
What happens to the space afterward?
The area is left graded and ready for whatever is next: a new patio at a different size, a gravel sitting area, a lawn that finally drains, or the base for an addition. Because the base is the usual culprit, replacing the surface without replacing the base is the one thing worth not doing — if the patio failed, the material underneath has to go too.
If a replacement surface is going in, we sequence the removal around it — and say so before the work starts.
What patio removal costs in Rochester
We do not publish prices we cannot stand behind, because the number depends on what is actually on site. Residential removal projects generally have a $1,000 minimum project value. What moves the quote:
- Surface material — pavers and brick lift quickly; thick flagstone and mortared stone do not
- Base depth and type, which is often the largest part of the load
- Edge restraint and any raised walls or steps built into the patio
- Whether the units are being salvaged, which is slower than hauling
- Access for a machine versus a hand carry, and the distance to the trailer
How to get an accurate number
Send photos of the structure, the ground around it and the path a trailer would take to reach it. Add rough dimensions if you have them. Most jobs are quoted from that alone; anything structural or unusual gets looked at first.

Can you save the pavers so I can reuse them?
Yes, if the units are lifted rather than scooped, which is slower work — tell us before we start. Some breakage is normal on thin or already-cracked pavers, and old brick with sand joints often comes up cleaner than modern thin pavers.
Is this the same as concrete patio removal?
No. This page covers pavers, brick, flagstone and stone on a sand or stone base. A poured, stamped or broom-finished concrete slab is a different job with different equipment and disposal — see concrete patio removal.
Do you remove just the base, or the surface too?
Both, because a failed patio is a base failure. If the surface is genuinely sound and only the base has moved, we can lift and relay instead of hauling — that is a different quote and worth asking about.
Where does the old base material go?
Mixed aggregate and sand go out with the load to a facility that accepts it. Base material is not clean fill and does not get dumped on someone else's property.
How deep do you go?
Down to subgrade where the patio is being replaced, because that is where the compaction failed. If the area is going back to lawn, we take out enough to leave a workable grade.
