Retaining Wall Removal in Rochester, NY

A retaining wall is holding something back, so taking it out is a sequencing problem before it is a hauling problem. The soil above it has to be cut down in steps, and the slope left stable — not just shorter.

  • From $1,000
  • Haul-away included
  • Footings and posts pulled

Why homeowners remove a retaining wall

The wall has failed or is failing: it is leaning, bulging or dropping, and the fix is usually replacement rather than repair.

Or the grade is being changed — a new patio, a driveway widening, or drainage work that needs the wall out of the way.

What we remove

  • Segmental block and keystone walls
  • Timber crib and railroad-tie walls
  • Natural stone and fieldstone walls
  • Paver and block planter walls
  • Buried footing, drain tile and filter fabric

Signs it is time

  • A wall leaning or bulging outward
  • Capstones loose or missing, blocks shifting
  • Soil pushing through the face
  • Water pooling behind the wall, or a wet patch at its base
Regraded slope where a retaining wall was removed
Worked top-down, the slope is left stable rather than simply lower.

Our retaining wall removal process

  1. Assess what it holdsHeight, surcharge above, and what is behind it. Tall walls or ones carrying a driveway get a closer look before anything moves.
  2. Work top-down in sectionsThe load is reduced in steps rather than pulling the bottom out, which is how walls and people get hurt.
  3. Regrade as it comes downSoil is cut back and compacted in lifts so the slope is stable at every stage.
  4. Remove the footing and drainageBuried footing, drain tile and fabric come out with the wall.
  5. Leave it stableThe finished slope is graded and seeded or covered, and the area is cleaned.

Special considerations

  • Walls over roughly four feet, or any wall with a driveway or structure above it, need an engineer's assessment before removal — we will say so rather than guess.
  • If the wall is holding a neighbour's grade up, that is a legal question as much as a construction one.
  • Drainage is part of the wall. If the old wall failed, the water had somewhere to go that it should not have.

What happens to the space afterward?

The slope is left stable and graded, with the footing and old drainage gone. If a new wall is going back in, the removal is planned so the new footing can go into undisturbed ground.

If a replacement surface is going in, we sequence the removal around it — and say so before the work starts.

What retaining wall removal costs in Rochester

We do not publish prices we cannot stand behind, because the number depends on what is actually on site. Residential removal projects generally have a $1,000 minimum project value. What moves the quote:

  • Height and length, and how much soil has to be rehandled
  • Material — block comes apart, mortared stone does not
  • Whether an engineer's assessment is needed
  • Access for equipment and where spoil can be staged

How to get an accurate number

Send photos of the structure, the ground around it and the path a trailer would take to reach it. Add rough dimensions if you have them. Most jobs are quoted from that alone; anything structural or unusual gets looked at first.

Retaining Wall Removal FAQs

Is removing a retaining wall dangerous?

It can be. A wall holding a slope is under load, and taking the bottom out first is how people get hurt. We work top-down in sections.

Do I need an engineer?

For a low garden wall, no. For a tall wall, or one near a foundation, property line or driveway, get the assessment first — we will tell you when that applies.

Can the block or stone be reused?

Often yes. It is lifted and stacked rather than loaded if you ask before the work starts.

What happens to the soil behind the wall?

It is regraded to a stable slope, or hauled if there is more than the site can absorb. That gets decided before we start.
