Driveway Removal in Rochester, NY

A driveway is the largest flat surface on most residential properties, and the removal is where quotes go wrong. Thickness, reinforcement and what is underneath decide the load, not the square footage alone.

  • From $1,000
  • Haul-away included
  • Footings and posts pulled

Why homeowners remove a driveway

Driveways fail at the joints and the edges first. Once water gets under the slab and freezes, sections lift and drop, and patching becomes an annual ritual.

Or the driveway is being replaced with something else — wider, different material, or re-graded for drainage.

What we remove

  • Concrete driveways, including reinforced slabs
  • Asphalt driveways and overlays
  • Aprons, approaches and curb cuts
  • Gravel and crushed-stone drives
  • Base material where it has failed

Signs it is time

  • Heaved or dropped sections at joints
  • Cracks that return after every patch
  • Ponding water against the garage or the street
  • A driveway too narrow, too short or badly sloped

Our driveway removal process

  1. Measure and probeWe check thickness in more than one spot and look for reinforcement, because a 4-inch drive and a 7-inch one are different loads.
  2. Cut the jointsThe slab is cut free at the garage apron and at the street so nothing pulls on the structure.
  3. Break and loadBroken from the free edge inward, loaded out, with mesh and rebar separated.
  4. Assess the baseSound base can stay and be re-graded; failed base comes out with the slab.
  5. Leave it readyThe subgrade is graded for the new surface, and the site swept.

Special considerations

  • Aprons and curb cuts often fall under municipal rules — check before a new one is poured, not before the old one comes out.
  • Rebar and mesh are separated before disposal so clean concrete can go to a facility that takes it.
  • If a new driveway is going in, sequence removal and pour together so the base is not re-done twice.

What happens to the space afterward?

The footprint is left graded and compactable, ready for a new driveway, gravel, or a different layout. Where the base was sound, it stays and saves money on the replacement.

If a replacement surface is going in, we sequence the removal around it — and say so before the work starts.

What driveway removal costs in Rochester

We do not publish prices we cannot stand behind, because the number depends on what is actually on site. Residential removal projects generally have a $1,000 minimum project value. What moves the quote:

  • Square footage and thickness
  • Reinforcement and how much cutting is needed
  • Base removal where it has failed
  • Access for equipment and where the trailer can stand

How to get an accurate number

Send photos of the structure, the ground around it and the path a trailer would take to reach it. Add rough dimensions if you have them. Most jobs are quoted from that alone; anything structural or unusual gets looked at first.

Driveway Removal FAQs

Do you remove asphalt driveways too?

Yes. Asphalt comes up in sections, and millings are kept separate because they are recyclable.

Can you leave the base for a new driveway?

Yes, where it is sound. We grade it and you can build on it. If it is contaminated or saturated, it comes out.

How long does it take?

Most residential driveways are one day. Long drives, thick slabs or poor access run into two.

Does the quote include disposal?

Yes, disposal is inside the number rather than added as a separate line.
