Landscape Timber Removal in Rochester, NY

Timber walls and edging were the cheap option for decades, and now a lot of them are failing at once. Ties split, rot from the inside, and lean into the bed they were meant to hold.

  • From $1,000
  • Haul-away included
  • Footings and posts pulled

Why homeowners remove a landscape timber

Railroad ties have a finite life outdoors. Once they check and split, water gets in, they rot through, and the wall loses its shape.

Older ties can also be a disposal problem — some contain creosote, and that changes how they can be handled. Better to find out before they are in a pile on the lawn.

What we remove

  • Railroad tie walls and steps
  • Timber garden edging and borders
  • Timber retaining walls of any height
  • Timber beds and raised planting boxes
  • Soil and plants that have to come out with them

Signs it is time

  • Ties split, crumbling or hollow when probed
  • A wall that has bellied out or lost its batter
  • Soil spilling over the top course
  • Edging that has heaved out of the ground

Our landscape timber removal process

  1. Check what the ties areOld creosote-treated ties may need a specific disposal route. We confirm before quoting so nothing sits on your lawn while we find out.
  2. Lift the coursesTimbers come out course by course, with the soil behind cut back as we go.
  3. Separate and haulTies are kept separate from soil and general debris.
  4. Regrade the bedSoil is regraded and compacted where a new border or wall is going in.
  5. Clean upThe bed is raked, edges tidied, and the site left clear.

Special considerations

  • Plants and shrubs in the bed usually have to come out with the timbers — say what you want saved before we start.
  • Creosote-treated timber is not general debris and cannot be burned or taken to any facility. It gets handled properly.
  • If a new wall is going in the same line, the soil behind needs re-compacting; reusing loose fill is how new walls fail.

What happens to the space afterward?

The bed is left regraded and clear, ready for a new border, block wall, planting or lawn. Old ties are gone rather than stacked behind a shed.

If a replacement surface is going in, we sequence the removal around it — and say so before the work starts.

What landscape timber removal costs in Rochester

We do not publish prices we cannot stand behind, because the number depends on what is actually on site. Residential removal projects generally have a $1,000 minimum project value. What moves the quote:

  • Length and number of courses
  • How much soil has to be moved to get them out
  • Disposal route for treated timber
  • Plants and shrubs that come out with the bed

How to get an accurate number

Send photos of the structure, the ground around it and the path a trailer would take to reach it. Add rough dimensions if you have them. Most jobs are quoted from that alone; anything structural or unusual gets looked at first.

Landscape Timber Removal FAQs

Can you take old railroad ties?

Yes, but they need the right disposal route rather than the general debris pile. We confirm that before quoting so there are no surprises.

Do you save the plants?

Only if you tell us which ones before we start. Timbers usually have to come out from under the planting.

Can you replace the timbers with a block wall?

We remove rather than install. We can pull the timbers and leave the line ready for whoever builds the new wall.

Is this a big job?

Usually not, but it often falls under the project minimum on its own — it makes most sense alongside a patio or planting rebuild.
