Pergola Removal in Rochester, NY

A pergola is four posts and a lot of joinery, and it usually sits over a patio you want to keep using. That means the removal has to protect the surface underneath while taking the load off it.

  • From $1,000
  • Haul-away included
  • Footings and posts pulled

Why homeowners remove a pergola

Pergolas weather badly in this climate: the tops hold water, the beam ends rot, and a leaning post puts the whole frame out of square. Repairs rarely last.

Or the shade no longer suits — a pergola over a patio that has been re-purposed as an outdoor kitchen or a play area gets in the way.

What we remove

  • Wood and cedar pergolas
  • Vinyl and composite pergola kits
  • Aluminium and steel pergolas
  • Slatted shade roofs and climbing-plant frames
  • Post bases, anchor plates and concrete footings

Signs it is time

  • A post that has twisted or leaned out of square
  • Rotted beam ends where water collects
  • Joists or slats that have sagged
  • Anchor plates lifting or rusted through

Our pergola removal process

  1. Quote from photosSpan, height, material and what it sits on. Photos of the post bases show whether they are anchored into a slab or set in the ground.
  2. Cover the surfaceThe patio or deck underneath is protected before anything comes down.
  3. Clear the topSlats or shade panels come off first, then the beams, then the posts.
  4. Release the basesAnchors are unbolted from the slab, or footings dug out where the posts are set in ground.
  5. Clean the areaThe surface is swept, and any bolt holes or base plates are made good.

Special considerations

  • If the pergola is bolted into a paver patio, the anchors come out of the pavers — those units may need re-setting afterwards, and we will say so up front.
  • Climbing plants have to be cut back before the frame moves, which is the homeowner's call, not ours.
  • An attached pergola (fixed to the house) is a different job from a free-standing one — the attachment is the risky part.

What happens to the space afterward?

The patio underneath is left clean and usable, with anchors removed rather than cut flush. If a shade structure is being replaced, the post locations can be reused or moved without leaving old hardware in the surface.

If a replacement surface is going in, we sequence the removal around it — and say so before the work starts.

What pergola removal costs in Rochester

We do not publish prices we cannot stand behind, because the number depends on what is actually on site. Residential removal projects generally have a $1,000 minimum project value. What moves the quote:

  • Span and height — taller frames need more handling
  • Material and how it is jointed
  • Whether it is anchored into a slab, pavers or set in ground
  • Attached versus free-standing

How to get an accurate number

Send photos of the structure, the ground around it and the path a trailer would take to reach it. Add rough dimensions if you have them. Most jobs are quoted from that alone; anything structural or unusual gets looked at first.

Pergola Removal FAQs

Can you remove the pergola and leave the patio intact?

Yes, in most cases. The surface is covered, sections are lowered rather than dropped, and anchors are unbolted rather than cut.

Do you remove the concrete footings?

Yes, where posts are set in the ground. Where they are bolted to a slab, the anchors come out and the holes are filled.

Can the pergola be taken apart for reuse?

Yes, if you ask before we start. Careful dismantling is slower than demolition and the quote reflects it.

What about vines growing on it?

They need cutting back before the frame moves. We will not pull a mature vine off a structure and hope the siding survives.
